The article published in the New York Herald Tribune on April 15, 1959, offers a detailed look at Max Neuhaus's early academic and performing career at the Manhattan School of Music (MSM).

MSM Percussion Ensemble: Neuhaus was a key member of the pioneering Percussion Ensemble at the Manhattan School of Music, led by his mentor Paul Price. Price played a key role in establishing percussion as a solo and ensemble instrument, equal to traditional strings or wind instruments.

During this period, 1959, the ensemble performed radical works for the time, including compositions by Lou Harrison and Michael Colgrass. These concerts were often held in the Max Neuhaus Performance Archive at MSM's Hubbard Auditorium.
1959 was a turning point for Neuhaus. It was the year he met John Cage, whose influence inspired him to pursue a career as a professional percussionist.
