1978 - The concept of AUDIUM By Max Neuhaus.

The realization of this series of Audium Models is the first step in the implementation of Audium, and accomplishes most of its research, both aesthetic and technical. Thus in Audium, the model's telephone booths become home telephones and the sounds heard in the exhibition space become the broadcast.

___________

Phase I - The implementation of a development tool -- a high level portable computer working environment which allows the hands on evaluation of analysis techniques, decision making, control stratagems and sound processing possibilities; leading to a definition and implementation of SENSE, MATCH, SOUND and COMBINE.(see Audium Model block diagram description)

Phase II - Audium Model, a stand alone, auto boot system which implements SENSE, MATCH, SOUND and COMBINE for three voice inputs. It is adapted at the exhibition site using the development tool.

Phase III - The implementation a broadcast system with the means to handle large number of callers simultaneously according to specifications developed in Phase I and II. In order to be practical it will require the implementation of a low cost special purpose "caller module" to perform telephone line handling, SENSE, MATCH and SOUND for each caller.

Combine System

 Made up of:

COMBINE MATCH - Uses the output of each SENSE module to develop control signals for COMBINE.  It consists of a neural network with the following characteristics: real time unsupervised learning for each new user, a means of relating/acknowledging previous users activities with those of current users and a means of reasoning about time.

COMBINE - Mixes/modifies outputs of individual SOUND modules to construct a stereo signal.  It consists of a set of sound synthesis/transformation possibilities implemented with DSP hardware.

** "Complementary" is deliberately undefined at this time. Defining it--hands on--constitutes the aesthetic dimension of the research.
