In 1968, Max Neuhaus recorded the album Electronics and Percussion: Five Realizations by Max Neuhaus (Columbia Masterworks, MS 7139), produced by David Behrman. On this album, Neuhaus performs pieces by five avant-garde composers: Earle Brown, Morton Feldman, Sylvano Bussotti, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and John Cage.
Compositions and realizations
The album features the following compositions, recorded at Columbia Studios on February 15 and 16, 1968:
Earle Brown, Four Systems – for Four Amplified Cymbals (1954): Neuhaus performs this piece using four amplified cymbals, with a performance recorded in 1964.
Morton Feldman, The King of Denmark (1964): A composition for percussion, performed by Neuhaus in a 1964 recording.
Sylvano Bussotti, Coeur Pour Batteur – Positively Yes (1959): A 1965 performance of this composition for percussion.
Karlheinz Stockhausen, No. 9 Zyklus for One Percussionist (1959): Neuhaus performs this piece for percussion in a 1968 recording.
John Cage, Fontana Mix – Feed (1958): Neuhaus had previously performed Cage's graphic score, Fontana Mix, in a version based on electronic feedback. This 1965 performance is included on the album.
