2005 - Max Neuhaus – Time Piece Beacon

In everyday life, sound is often perceived as a signal: sounds heard as a warning or signs of reference and orientation, announcing a church service, the end of school for the day, an emergency or even just the time of day.

Within this spirit, Neuhaus’ Time Piece Beacon would create a space outdoors around the Riggio Galleries that is defined with sound. It would occur periodically as a sound signal. Unlike the traditional sound signal of a bell, though, whose sound commences at its peak and then slowly dies out, at Beacon Neuhaus would create a sound that those nearby discern only when it disappears. Beginning inaudibly, the sound gradually grows. At its peak, it suddenly stops, creating a moment of stillness.

Thus, this building, which as a house of art is focused upon human perception, at regular intervals emits a signal momentarily reminding people of its presence. Max Neuhaus would give Dia Beacon a voice.
