Max Neuhaus

1965
1965 - Neuhaus, Max. “Zyklus.” Percussionist, Number 1. Chicago Tribune November 3; 6-12

In 1965, Max Neuhaus authored a definitive text titled "Zyklus" for the inaugural issue of The Percussionist (the journal of the Percussive Arts Society), where he provided a technical and interpretive guide to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Nr. 9 Zyklus.

Neuhaus describes the unique graphic notation of Zyklus, which is printed on a spiral-bound circular score that allows the performer to start on any page and read in either direction.
He outlines the challenges of managing 21 instruments simultaneously, arguing that the performer must treat the massive battery as a "multi-surfaced bank of timbre" rather than a set of individual instruments.
Neuhaus explains how he taught himself to play the work spontaneously (making decisions "on the fly") after Stockhausen expressed dissatisfaction with other performers who "pre-composed" their versions.
