1976 - Max Neuhaus, Composer, Presents ‘Round’ in Rotunda of U.S. Custom House on Bowling Green. November 19 - 21, 1976

Vacant Landmark Opens Doors for Avant-Garde Music.” Letter from Creative Time to New York Landmarks Conservancy. [Undated].

This document outlines the logistics and artistic intent for the three-day installation Round, a pivotal site-specific sound work presented by Creative Time in the rotunda of the U.S. Custom House (now the National Museum of the American Indian).

The Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House was vacant at the time. Neuhaus chose the Rotunda for its massive, 140-foot elliptical dome and specific reverberation characteristics.
Rather than a performance with a beginning and end, Neuhaus created a continuous sonic environment. The sound was generated by electronic circuits and distributed through multiple speakers to interact with the dome's architecture, creating "zones" of frequency that changed as the listener moved
