In her article “Landscape Compositions” (2012) in the journal Archiv für Musikwissenschaft, Irene Kletschke discusses concepts of acoustic cartography and soundwalking, with particular reference to Max Neuhaus and Hildegard Westerkamp.
The article explores how artists address and transform the perception of soundscapes. Neuhaus’s works, especially his “listening walks,” are discussed as examples of approaches that focus on conscious listening in natural or urban environments. The focus is on how these compositions transcend traditional music theory and redefine the listener’s relationship to the acoustic environment.
