1982 - Cage's introduction to his Themes & Variations (Barrytown, N.Y.: Station Hill Press)

In the introduction to his book Themes & Variations (Barrytown, N.Y.: Station Hill Press, 1982), John Cage discusses Max Neuhaus's work and approach to sound, reprinted in Audio Culture, pp. 221-25

The Dedication: Cage explicitly mentions Neuhaus in the context of his own shifting focus toward environmental sound. He credits Neuhaus with expanding the definition of music to include the "unintentional" sounds of the world.
The "Listen" Project: Cage references Neuhaus's "LISTEN" excursions (started in 1966), where Neuhaus would lead groups on silent walks through industrial or urban environments, treating the ambient noise as a performance.
Philosophical Alignment: Cage uses Neuhaus as a primary example of an artist who moved away from making sounds to providing a context for listening to existing sounds. This aligned with Cage's own pursuit of silence and the removal of the composer's ego.
