In his October 11, 1981, article for The New York Times, Michael Anthony highlights the premiere of the "RadioVisions" series on National Public Radio (NPR). This 14-part series was designed to bring experimental "new music" and radiophonic art to a broad national audience.

While Anthony's article introduces the series as a whole, it represents a pivotal moment for artists like Max Neuhaus, whose work fundamentally challenged the traditional boundaries of radio.

The series showcased how experimentalists viewed the radio infrastructure not just as a transmission tool but as a musical instrument.
Neuhaus had already pioneered this concept with his 1977 project "Radio Net," which utilized NPR's nationwide network of 190 stations to create a "two-way public aural space". In these works, listeners across the country could phone in and contribute sounds that Neuhaus would then loop and modulate in real-time.
The 1981 launch of RadioVisions documented by Anthony signaled a period where experimental "new music" began to be rebranded and institutionalized as a distinctively American experimental music tradition, supported by both NPR and the NEA
