Here, the work’s sound is introduced gradually; beginning
inaudibly it grows slowly over a period of minutes and,
at its height, suddenly disappears. The long subtle
emergence of the sound causes it to go unnoticed.
It becomes apparent only at the instant of its
disappearance, creating a sense of stillness.
Time Piece Stommeln is based on the Halachic
calculation of time: its soundings divide the interval
between sunrise and sunset into twelve equal parts
which vary in length with the seasons.
With this work, Max Neuhaus gave the synagogue a
voice and projected it into the center of the town.
Thus, for the first time since the inception of the
Synagogue Stommeln project, a work of art in public
space has been created that will remain as an invisible
permanent entity in Stommeln.
