On April 10, 1960, the premiere performance of Ralph Shapey's 
Soliloquy ("To Be or Not To Be") for narrator, string quartet, and percussion took place at Kaufmann Hall in New York City. Max Neuhaus, then a student at the Manhattan School of Music, performed the percussion part as part of his work interpreting avant-garde music during this period.
