At the time of this performance, Max Neuhaus was a student of Paul Price at the Manhattan School of Music. Price was a pivotal figure in the percussion ensemble movement, and Neuhaus was a key member of his professional and student ensembles during the late 1950s. This particular event at Pius X Hall was part of a series of workshops and concerts intended to showcase and promote new literature for percussion.
