Max Neuhaus

1965
Spoleto Festival Italy, Performances in the chamber music concerts Jun 2, 1965

Frank O’Hara was asked by Gian Carlo Menotti to select the American poets for Settimana della Poesia at the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, June 26 through July 2, 1965.

Max Neuhaus's account of Morton Feldman's percussion piece "The King of Denmark." As requested, Max performed this Feldman composition, extremely softly, in the theater foyer, with a small group of listeners arranged in a semicircle around him and his elaborate apparatus of bells, gongs, pipes, triangles, cymbals, and so on. Pound, the only one seated, stood slightly ahead of the others and carefully watched Max's every movement, absorbing the delicate, widely spaced sounds for the entire performance, approximately seven minutes in total.
