While Max Neuhaus (1939–2009) was not a contemporary participant, his legacy as the artist who coined the term "sound installation" served as a foundational theoretical framework for the exhibition. Curators Amelia Kahl and Spencer Topel posited sound as a material of art—comparable to wood or glass—a concept pioneered by Neuhaus.
