Max Neuhaus's sound installation
Five Russians (A Tuned Room), first shown at the Clocktower Gallery in 1979, utilized hidden speakers and strategic seating to manipulate acoustics and make the listener a subject of the work. Artist and critic Robert Pincus-Witten reviewed the installation in the January 1980 issue of Artforum, describing its unsettling effects in the gallery's unique space.
