This Cold Case 02 is an invitation to explore the systems developed by Max Neuhaus for his site-specific artworks. It draws on reverse engineering studies conducted by researchers from diverse backgrounds. The complex ecosystem revealed through their analyses of the enduring nature of this soundscape is illustrated here by a mind map that takes the form of a tree with its root system (for the sources), its trunk (for the materiality of the work), and its branches (for the effects). Quotes from interviews with Max Neuhaus, compiled by Daniele Balit and Matthieu Saladin in the book Pianos Don't Grow on Trees (2019), enrich the discussions surrounding this ecosystem.
